Bryan Henry: Former Arizona Diamondbacks AAA RHP

1. Could you tell us your story on dropping down?

I was 28 years old and entering my second season at Triple A. I was at the point in my career were if something did not change my career could be close to coming to an end. The D-Backs and I talked about the possibility of dropping down and felt like it would be the best decision. I started the year on the DL to continue to learn the new slot.

2. What are some of the advantages you had from your arm angle?

When I threw over the top I relied heavily on my control/command. I did not throw very hard (87-90) but I could spot up. The down side of that was when I missed a spot, the ball was punished. With the new arm slot it was less about command and more about movement. It took the pressure of trying to be perfect with my pitches off and allowed me to really attack the strike zone.

3. If you didn't drop down, do you think you would have had the same success?

I wish I would have dropped down earlier. I did it more of as a last resort. I felt like I really was just starting to get a feel for it after my month in Indy ball. I feel like I could have had the same success I did over the top and maybe even gone further.

4. What would you tell someone debating on changing their arm angle?

You have to be 100% committed. It is not some magic trick that will solve your problems. You have to be ready to work even harder to learn something new.

5. Are there any mechanical tips that you'd give to someone throwing sidearm/submarine?

Best thing I could say is don't feel for it. Cut it loose.

6. What pitches did you throw?

I threw a FB, SL, CH

7. How did you pitch to lefties/righties?

Pounded righties inside with FB's and went sliders away. Would occasionally throw a FB away if I was trying to freeze the hitter. Lefties I would stay away mostly with FB's occasionally throwing a FB or SL inside to keep them honest. CH was just for show to make the FB look a little harder.

8. Lastly what was your favorite part about pitching from down there?

I enjoyed everything about it. Like I said, I wish I would have started doing it earlier. I had a lot of fun learning and competing with the new slot.
