Roy Merritt
LHP AAA Mets, Dodgers, Mexico
1. Could you tell us your story on dropping down?
I started dropping down as a kids. When I was younger, I didn't have velo, so I was crafty & I competed anyway that I could.
2. What are some of the advantages you have from your arm angle?
I have multiple arm angles, so it's an advantage for me because batters can't look for the same arm slot. It's 1 extra things that they have think & worry about.
3. If you didn't drop down, do you think you would have had the same success?
I can't say the type of success I would've had. I feel like I would've succeeded either way because I compete. My 1st full season the Mets dropped me down permanently because they wanted me to be a lefty specialist. My 2 full season, I was the closer in AA with Binghamton.
4. What would you tell someone debating on changing their arm angle?
If it doesn't feel natural, don't do it because I've done it almost my whole life. I know guys that teams tried to change & it did not work out. Most of those guys also ended up having surgery because it was unnatural. I feel like if God gives everyone different abilities, so I wouldn't force it upon anyone.
5. Are there any mechanical tips that you'd give to someone throwing sidearm/submarine?
the biggest tip for a side-armer is to keep their front shoulder down & stay closed for as long as possible.
6. What pitches do you throw?
over the top: 2seam, 4seam, sinker, cutter, slider, curve & changeFrom the side: 2seam, 4seam, sinker, slider, changeFastball velo: 87-94
7. How do you pitch to lefties/righties?
it honestly depends on the hitter and what's working that day.
8. Lastly what is your favorite part about pitching from down there?
it's easier on my arm & it's a different look
